And all I had was milk duds…

December 26, 2000 | 1:02 am

Yahoo! The season of quality films has begun! Enter: Chocolat! A delightful independent comedy about a small, strict French catholic town and how it copes with the opening of a chocolaterie (during Lent, no less) and the ‘unorthodox’ people who run it. Superbly written and acted…will probably net Judi Dench another academy award. And remember the title…I haven’t been that hungry after seeing a movie since Eat Drink Man Woman. Those chocolate creation scenes are simply heavenly. ^_^ Catch this gem while you can!

Now I just have to be patient…Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Quills will be here soon enough. ^^
(Wah! January 22nd for CTHD :( )

Kwanzaa Knowledge Breeds Savings!

| 12:50 am

Just a little notice: Make sure the person you’re about to send a Happy Kwanzaa card to actually celebrates Kwanzaa. Just because someone is black, doesn’t mean they celebrate the holiday. In fact, many African Americans don’t (and chuckle when they receive Kwanzaa cards). Save yourself a couple bucks and ask first. ^^

I’ll have to give the Kwanzaa publicity machine a lot of credit. To go from non-existence to being mentioned in the same holiday breath with Christmas and Hanukkah in less than forty years is quite an accomplishment. More than a hundred years of built up national guilt certainly didn’t hurt the cause either. Congrats folks… and don’t forget to light your Umoja candle tonight. ^^

We Can’t Get Up The Hill, Miss Daisy

| 12:24 am

Citizens of the South: Get a fucking clue! Every year some of you are subjected to at least a few days of snow. And when it happens, you act like complete pussies! Closing down your schools because there’s an inch of snow on the ground!? Jefferson Davis must be rolling over in his grave right now!

You know there’s a good possibility that it will happen, so prepare for it. If we Great Lakes folk can go to school when there’s more than a foot of snow and there’s a -20 wind chill, certainly you can sneeze a few times to clear your driveway of snow. Send an ambassador to Minnesota to do some research, post haste!

What Mel Wants…

December 16, 2000 | 1:05 am

"Dude, Where’s Your Brain?" This was the battle cry in the little grey cells as I was waiting in line for tickets at the movies tonight. Swarms of teens in line, at the concessions and in the parking lot were doing their "Dude!" impressions ad nauseam. (The nausea will surely come later after they hit the bars). I heard more than one "I hope they don’t do that shit in the theater". Thank Joe Pesci I didn’t have to oppourtunity to find out. ^_^
(Note: I’ll probably still go see that movie. I’m a fan of That 70’s Show and American Pie, so I’ll give it a shot. It’s seems stupid, but it might be an enjoyable two hours worth of stupid. ^^)

So, what did I see? What Women Want. A very funny and warm comedy featuring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Guys..what would you do if you suddenly had the power to read women’s minds? Woah, Calm down and wipe that grin off your face. Assume you actually have a few scruples and can force the blood back up to your skull, ne? Go pay your $7.50 and see how Mel uses it and leave with a chuckle on your mind and a smile on your face. (And yes, Guys, he does use it, in part, for what you were thinking). His coping with his newly found powers is worth the price of admission alone. ^_^

I’d also like to give a thumbs up to soundtrack selection committee for this movie. Smooth tunes from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and The Temptations make for a wonderfully romantic mood, especially if you have someone to share ‘cheek time’ with. ^^ One exception goes to the choice of "Something’s Gotta Give” performed by Sammy Davis, Jr. I respect Sammy and all he did immensely, but his interpretation is weak and simply a disgrace to the power of that song. If you want to hear the true nature of the song, find the Ella Fitzgerald version of the song (Doumo Syl!). Nothing can compare! :)

Winner and Still Champion: Gaea!

December 13, 2000 | 1:08 am

Anyone else get pimp-slapped by Mamma Nature this week? It’s like she just woke up from a five year hibernation and is in a very cranky mood. While I’ve always loved Winter and am happy to actually see it exist as a season this time, I get feeling we’re going to get killed during January & February. We caught the tail of the storm that buried Chicago. It produced hurricane speed winds and killed power for about 300K people in NEOhio, yours truly included. Listening to the wind sound more and more like a locomotive was very unnerving…especially since I have no basement to run to in case of a tornado. ^^;;

Even a Level 30 Cleric couldn’t save this movie…

| 12:21 am

Dungeons & Dragons…what a piece of tripe! I’d call it the worse movie of the year, if not for this year’s earlier hell spawn Battlefield Earth. Jeremy Irons…did you even read that script? Was it some sort package deal? In order to get that part in Lolita, you have to do this pet project later? *Sigh* How dismal. I guess most actors have one shit movie that they’d like to forget. And yes, I’m a former D&D player…that just made things worse. ^^ If you want quality (before the big oscar contenders show up), try Unbreakable. A beautifully scripted and paced movie…I wouldn’t be surprised if it got a few nominations, just like Sixth Sense did.

I’m Not a Number, I’m a Homer

December 6, 2000 | 1:12 am

Kudos! To The Simpsons who are still keeping it funny even after ten years, especially with last Sunday’s tribute to the Internet and Prisoner. To South Park..for attempting their version of my nemesis Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, as well as tonight’s “Krazy Kenny” which set a new low for South Park disgust…Well done, Trey and Matt! ^_^. To everyone who’s braved Politically Incorrect over the past month and brought more amusement to the post-presidential-campaign…also to the host for his “Drinky McDumbass” remark.

Good Fight, Mr. Gore

| 12:50 am

Looks like Gore’s number is just about up. I’ve had no problem with Gore dragging things out as far as he could. Considering the man actually won the national popular vote, I think he has every right to prove his ‘electoral college-ness’. I believe that he probably won Florida, but it doesn’t looks like he’s going to be able to prove it. Congrats America…the person you voted for to be your president will not be taking that oath in January. Al Gore voters…your vote did not count. Don’t look the other way these next four years..support the anti-electoral congress movement! And no, these are not the writings of a ’sore loser’. These are the writings of someone who believes everyone’s vote should actually count…who just happen to vote for Nader. ^_^
