Red Card in the Shadows of your Mind

June 23, 2002 | 2:36 am

Look around you

The war on terrorism is in full gear. Homeland security is moving towards becoming a cabinet position. The news media is paying far too much attention to every little local mishap as a possible terrorist action. And America is eating it up…

Do me a favor. Take a look around you. Not at what’s going on in the mainstream. But what’s going on to the side of the mainstream. Linked to the mainstream, but carefully positioned in the shadows. And even those things that are no longer deemed worthy of news time. There’s way too much attention positioned toward the war on terrorism….and there’s certain to be people taking advantage of it.
What else is new….

World Cup Review…American Style

Alrighty! Let’s take a look at American coverage of the World Cup:

  • The Best: Univision
[Truly live coverage; Many games shown; Intelligent (from what I’ve been told) play-by-play; The man who goes ‘GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL’ ^_^]
  • The Mediocre: ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN Classic
[10 second delay; Not many games shown; Pensive play-by-play by the ‘not ready for ESPN former soccer star’ players; No man who goes ‘GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL’ ^_^]
  • The Horrid: ABC
[30 *hour* delay; Almost no games shown; Insulting play-by-play by guys trying to make yesterday’s game sound exciting to all the people who’ve already heard the result; Not as entertaining as the man who goes ‘GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL’ ^_^]

That’s right campers….for the best in World Cup viewing, you had to go to the Spanish language Univision. I’m so pleased that my area finally got this channel. ^^ Lost way too much sleep watching live matches in the middle of the night. But a yell of ‘GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL’ at 4am is still quite sweet. ^^

It’s time for the US companies to get a grip! The US-Mexico game…the 2:30am US-Mexico game got over 7 million viewers in the US (4 million on Univision, 3 million on ESPN). Hello? Anyone home McFly? Does the US team actually have to win a World Cup without much corporate support before you asses come on board? Bah!

PS: Go South Korea! ^_^
