New Swiss army knife…now with Stem Cell research!

November 28, 2004 | 8:39 am

Crossed fingers and big thumbs up for the Swiss referendum on stem cell research. What a concept…instead of bulling your public into what you believe, you actually put it to a vote and ask them about it.

(Not that it’s always a good idea to put everything to a vote. Sometimes what best for the whole isn’t always full comprehended within their little grey cells. But at least it’s interesting to see the people really given a true democratic voice, at a national level with frequency, somewhere in the world…)

Here’s hoping that there’s a positive result. The more countries that begin stem cell research, the more difficult it will be for the US to continue to ignore it. The minute something substantial is cured because of the research, most Americans will change their tunes rather quickly…

Update: The Swiss people have voted overwhelmingly to approve stem cell research. Bravo! ^_^

Turkey Day wish for the NFL

November 25, 2004 | 3:05 pm

National Football League….Please please please!
Start rotating ALL the teams that play on Thanksgiving so this Dallas & Detroit ‘classic’ nonsense can come to an end. Not just because both D&D suck this year…but just to give a chance for the fans to see something different…even perhaps see their favorite team play more often (instead of once every eon).

To borrow a bit from my man, Dave Chappelle, “What can I say about the Thanksgiving Classic that hasn’t already been said about Afghanistan. It’s bombed out and depleted.”

We’re concerned about fraud…just not in this country…

| 10:08 am

I’m sure most of you have heard about the political unrest in Ukraine after the hotly contested election. Protesters gathering for the candidate that’s rumored to have lost. Accusations of election fraud all throughout the country. This situation prompted the following response from the Bush administration, as reported by CNN:

In Washington, the White House issued a statement saying the United States is “deeply disturbed by extensive and credible indications of fraud committed in the Ukrainian presidential election.”

The White House statement said it strongly supported an investigation of the election.

@_@ Pity…

Guess we can’t expect our own president to see the past election he benefitted from in the same light, especially considering all the voting irregularities that are now coming to the surface…

Hoagie for sale…looks just like Abe Vigoda!

November 23, 2004 | 7:55 am

For your examination…A sandwich with the ‘face’ of the ‘Virgin Mary’:

Someone bought this sacrilicious dairy filled treat on eBay for $28,000.

Is it just me or doesn’t that look more like Madonna or Marilyn Monore? Still, I love the idea:

Step 1: Burn/Grill/Toast Bread
Step 2: Scrape into a female shape
Step 3: Put up for sale on eBay
Step 4: Profit!
(It’s so clear, it doesn’t even need a “?” step ^^)

I’m gonna try tonight…but just for myself. Soledad O’Brien on whole wheat bread! Whoooaaa Mama! ^_-

Side Note: For those that do believe…none of you are upset that this lady took a bite out of the Virgin Mary? Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Toasty!

Breaking big in American music…Japanese style

November 22, 2004 | 2:56 pm

One of the biggest stories in the Japanese music industry this year was the attempt by JPop queen Utada at breaking into American music market. She had a lot going for her…

She has a enjoyably natural R&B/Pop style which had helped her sell millions and millions of albums in Asia. (In fact, her greatest hits CD, that was released this year, beat out both Norah Jones & Usher in terms of first week sales…1.4 million). She not only was born in America (NYC), but speakes fluent, non-accented English. Island Def Jam had no problem signing her up to a one album contract. (Yes…one album…already a good sign, eh?) It looked like she had a better chance than anyone before her to make it big.

Well…dinna happen…or at least it ain’t happened yet.

Positive:

  • Her dance club release, “Devil Inside”, made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
(Chalk it up to the remix..the original ain’t worth spit)
  • She got a lot of newspaper exposure and even some MTV exposure.
(a lot more than any other big time Japanese artist has ever gotten…)
  • Her English album, Exodus, sold over a million copies in Japan already.
(Was released a month before the US release…IDJ gotta get their money…)

Negative:

  • She creates an album that not only sounds nothing like what she’s done before, but nothing that’s currently on the popular charts either.
(While I love creativity, you better be damn sure your new music will make the public respond)
  • Exodus has barely sold 20,000 copies (if that many).
  • Her first single, Easy Breezy, cried out in dark, looking for someone to care.
  • “You’re easy breezy…and I’m Japanesey…” Ugh.
(Yes, Utada, some of us know the reference, but it still sounds wack.)

Whenever a really big time Japanese artist comes over, it’s always so black and white. It seems like it’s either you make it big or go back home. No putting in your dues…no taking a few albums to try suss things out…not even trying to put a truely radio friendly song out. Don’t know why they expect anything different than what they’re getting.

Sure the industry isn’t always sure how to market them. It’s not like they don’t already know that. Since that’s the case, then perform music that’s easy to market. Sacrifice a little to get your foot in the door. Then show them what you’re truely about.

Exceptions do exist, but always later down the road. Putting in your dues has paid off recently for a couple Japanese artists:

Puffy (AmiYumi): Three well reviewed albums (with a fourth along the way). Many small club dates to build up a new fanbase. Singing the theme song to the Teen Titans show. And now they have their own show on Cartoon Network, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi.

Toshi Kubota: After a number of well reviewed albums, Toshi hooked up with whole neo-soul gang (?uestlove, Angie Stone, etc) and is getting major props for his new soul album, Time to Share. My man also recently became the first Japanese artist to ever perform on Soul Train!

Piston fans…you had to be big shots, didn’t ya…

November 20, 2004 | 5:30 pm

…you had to throw that plastic cup…

Attention to all those over-macho, sports obsessed assholes out there… You know-it-all, armchair supreme coach wannabees. Those who not only know they could do a better job, but if they were down there, they’d kick those players asses…

Gentlemen…your brothers-in-arms, Detroit Piston fans to be exact, learned the hard way last night that there’s only so many times you can shout and throw shit at players before they come up into the stands and whoop yo assssss….

Many extra GTA respect points to the Indiana Pacers’ Ron Arest and Jermaine O’Neal for the easily the best “You got knocked the fuck out!” punches of NBA fans I’ve ever seen…omigoto and a bag of chips, gentlemen!

Side Note: While he’s been indefinitely suspended, there’s one big plus for Ron “Five Fingers of Pain” Artest…he won’t have to worry about making time to promote his new rap album. He’s got all the time in world now…
