One good quote deserves a better counterpoint

April 10, 2005 | 1:37 pm

A recently received email produced this signature:

I shall pass through this world, but once.
Any good therefore that I can do, or any
kindness that I can show to any human being,
let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall never pass this way again.

(I’d love to attribute the quote to someone…but everyone from William Penn to Mahatma Gandhi to Stephan Grellet seems to claim it)

The quote was rather inspiring…but perhaps not in the direction that was intended…

I shall pass through this world, again and again.
I am capable of unique thought and critical thinking.
Yet anything that goes against the grain of my
personal social network, I am unwilling, uncomfortable
and unable to question. I am status quo. Let me
not defer nor forget it, for I shall always walk the same road.

You shall always walk the same road unless you begin to question that which you feel is ‘against the grain’. I actually think from what you say…you do indeed question much more than you are willing to admit in this small snipet. Too much brain running around in that!
