2005 Movie Year Round-up!

November 7, 2005 | 10:34 pm

‘Twas a much better year that I expected! Considering all the 3 star movies I saw, I really need to think about a 3 1/4 star rating…not all 3 stars are equal for damn sure. ^^

Three cheers again for Cedar Lee and Shaker Square for providing many an independent option….for Valley View for providing DLP and giant screens…and for Hudson Regal for actually making sure the picture was focused!
(Yes, Akron Theatres…you still suck massively!)

(Saw over 80 films…still feel like I missed something good tho…)

Can I get a witness?

Past Year’s Top Ten (Nov 2004-Oct 2005)

  1. Hotel Rwanda (4 Stars)
  2. Million Dollar Baby (4 Stars)
  3. Finding Neverland (4 Stars)
  4. The Incredibles (4 Stars)
  5. Sideways (3 1/2 Stars)
  6. Kinsey (3 1/2 Stars)
  7. The Machinist (3 1/2 Stars)
  8. Crash (3 1/2 Stars)
  9. Batman Begins (3 1/2 Stars)
  10. Saving Face (3 1/2 Stars)

Best of the Rest

  1. Sin City (3 1/2 Stars)
  2. The Aviator (3 1/2 Stars)
  3. The Woodsman (3 1/2 Stars)
  4. Mad Hot Ballroom (3 1/2 Stars)
  5. Cinderella Man (3 1/2 Stars)

Surprise Movie of the Year

  • Saving Face
(Came outta nowhere…very sweet, touching, well written love story between two women in the modern Queens, NY Chinese community)

Big, Red, Infected Donkey Dick of a Movie of the Year

  • Stealth
(Good lord…the worst episode of the Jaime Foxx show was better than this ‘Top Gun meets Brain Damage’ tripe)

Underrated Movie of the Year

  • Fever Pitch
(Jimmy Fallon plays the ultimate Red Sox fan like he was born into it…very intelligent comedy!)

Whole Lotta Fun Movie

  • Mad Hot Ballroom
(New York elementary school kids meet Latin dance competition!)

Very Difficult to Watch (but still Great) movie

  • The Woodsman
(Story of a ‘recovering’ child molester…arguably Kevin Bacon’s best performance)

Mouth Drop Wide Open movie

  • The Aristocrats
(All the most famous comedians anyone’s ever heard of….performing the dirtiest joke in the whole world than none of us have ever heard…)

Best on Video Seen this Year

  • The Upside of Anger
(The ending flipped me on my ass…so not expecting it. Joan Allen could get nominated for this one…)

Guilty Pleasure of the Year

  • Sahara
(Features the most ridiculous premise ever…but still a lot of fun ^_^)

An Experiment in Faith and Parchment (aka “When Qur’an met Bible”)

November 5, 2005 | 3:28 pm

When I took Chemistry in high school, my teacher told us of certain chemical combinations to never even think about attempting to mix during our labs.

You know…the heinous shiz that would need to be thrown out of the window within 10 seconds before half of the school landed on the Wonder Bread factory next door. You know…the heinous shiz you wrote down for later…just in case you needed to take out a really big mutha…

There are such combinations out in there in real life too. Or so they say…
Unlike those high school chemicals, I don’t think some things that seem at times to be so caustic together, need to be forever separated.

I had two such items of historical significance sitting in my bookshelf, so I decided to bring them together for tea and crumpets….

Qur'an meets Bible

I was initially surprised when I placed them together…no explosions! The skin didn’t melt off of my face. I wasn’t blinded the competing glories of whatever and whathaveyou. The milk in my fridge didn’t even go sour.
(Tho, throught it all, I did have my fire extinguisher nearby…)

What fascinated me most was what happened between the two test participants. They talked…they laughed. They shared stories of Abraham and Jesus. They compared publisher and agents. They made top ten lists of the biggest assholes who’ve used them for their own personal gain. They even realized that they have the same favorite movie: “Dodgeball”.

They left a comment to be placed in this report: “Please read us both. Don’t let sound bites and what your friend thought they heard guide your learning. Actually pick us up to see the unfiltered story…you’d be stunned what we both have in common.”

Qur’an and Bible have retired back to the bookshelf. They invited the Bhagavad-Gita over a few beers and to read through my dirty limerick book…
